CS2 Launch Options and FPS Settings

Most launch option lists you find are copied from CS:GO and half of them do nothing in CS2. Here is what still has an effect, and what to change in the video settings instead.

Launch options worth setting

-novid -high -nojoy
  • -novid skips the intro movie. Small, but you will restart the game often.
  • -high requests higher process priority. Helps on machines where a browser is competing for CPU.
  • -nojoy disables controller support and trims a little memory.
  • -fullscreen forces fullscreen if the game keeps launching windowed.

Options that no longer do anything

Skip -threads, -d3d9ex, -noaafonts and the various tickrate flags. They are CS:GO leftovers or were never real. Setting -threads in particular can make things worse by overriding the engine's own scheduling.

Video settings, in order of impact

  • Shadow quality — the single biggest cost. Low is fine and does not hide players.
  • Model and texture detail — lower this before touching resolution.
  • Global shadow quality and dynamic shadows — expensive for almost no competitive value.
  • Anti-aliasing — 2x MSAA is a reasonable middle ground; 8x is rarely worth it.
  • Multicore rendering — always on.

Resolution and aspect ratio

Lowering resolution buys frames but costs clarity at range. If you are dropping frames, reduce shadow and model detail first — they cost more and matter less. Stretched 4:3 is a preference, not a performance fix; the frames come from the lower pixel count, not the aspect ratio.

Cap your frame rate

An uncapped frame rate that swings between 200 and 400 feels worse than a stable 200. Use fps_max to lock it somewhere your machine holds comfortably — consistency matters more than the number.
